Early Records of the Chirruping Wedgebill Psophodes cristatus from New South Wales and Victoria

Abstract

The Chirruping Wedgebill Psophodes cristatus was described by John Gould from specimens that were supposedly collected at several localities, some of which are now outside the known range of the species. Examination of verified records of the species suggests that there may have been an error in Gould’s original description. Victorian reports of the species are also explored, and, although it cannot be determined if it was originally resident in that State, it was certainly found there as a vagrant.
