A Snapshot of the Nesting Behaviour of the Logrunner Orthonyx temminckii in South-eastern Queensland

Abstract

This note reports a fortuitous observation of a female Logrunner Orthonyx temminckii tending a nest. Three bouts of food provisioning to the nest-site were observed as well as the removal of a faecal sac from the nest. The faecal sac was buried beneath leaf-litter, behaviour that has not been previously documented for this species. Possible benefits for the concealment of faecal sacs are discussed for ground-nesting birds.
