Abstract

Two sightings of an adult Striated Heron Butorides striatus frequenting a freshwater section of the Brisbane River, well upstream of the tidal influence and far above the limit of mangrove distribution, are described. The observations indicate that the species is not restricted to marine and brackish conditions or those freshwater wetlands which are close to saline waters. Such a broad habitat tolerance is more typical of the Striated Heron elsewhere within its almost pantropical range.
